Explore the connection between trauma and alcohol in this raw, trauma-informed blog from Anna at Her Shift. A must-read for women navigating CPTSD, healing, or sobriety.
For over ten years, I didn’t drink a drop of alcohol — not because I was in recovery, but because I was trying to stay in control.
Growing up around volatile behaviour tied to alcohol left a scar I couldn’t name for years. I blamed the booze, not the trauma. But what I’ve realised is this: alcohol doesn’t turn people into monsters. It unmasks the parts they’ve been suppressing. It’s not truth serum for the soul — it’s truth juice for the unhealed self.
In the latest episode of Her Shift, I explore the nuances of trauma, control, and why some of us avoid alcohol entirely as a coping strategy. I share how trauma shaped my relationship with drinking, and how I used avoidance as protection — not freedom.
I also dive into a new take on manifestation: one that centres on the healed mundane. Not the big flashy wins, but the gentle peace of a safe nervous system. True healing isn’t about excitement; it’s about ease.
Whether you’re sober, sober-curious, or simply unravelling the conditioning you grew up with — this episode offers space to breathe, reflect, and shift.
